About SMITHA

Smart Meter Integrated Testing and Higher Analysis (SMITHA) is an Application Software developed by CPRI & CDAC, funded by MeitY, which is a Make in India Product under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Initiative of the Government of India. SMITHA is envisaged to be taken forward in a phased manner:

Phase 1: Bharat Smart Meter Protocol Analysis (BSMPA) Verification Test Tool

The Application Software developed as one common indigenised test tool for Testing & Verification of Conventional and Smart Energy Meters (NAN & WAN) for implementation of Data Exchange protocol based on IEC 62056 and Parameter verification tests as per IS 15959 Series: Data Exchange for Electricity Meter Reading, Tariff & Load Control – Companion Specification.

Existing Meter Testing Scenario in India

The main challenge faced by Indian Utility was, collecting data from meters of different makes. Since Manufacturer specific software's were used to read data from meters, it was a cumbersome process for the Indian utilities to maintain track of various makes of the meters, their formats and their data reading. As a solution, Companion Specification in the form of a guide is intended to provide a field level basis for efficient and secure electricity metering data in an open manner with judicious application of features and protocols of the International Standards.

The present existing test tools are expensive which adds cost on Smart Energy Meters

SMITHA: Make-in India product
  • Verification of implementation of Data Exchange protocol based on IEC 62056
  • Parameter verification tests as per Indian utility requirements based on IS 15959
Features of Beta version is limited to Conventional Energy Meters as per IS 15959 (Part 1): 2011
